Q&A: Appraisal methods
Q: What are some appraisal methods for evaluating staff?
A: The best way is to actually walk around and visit each staff person at least once per week while they are working (e.g., while making care coordination rounds, talking with a physician or patient, negotiating with a payer, or conducting a support group). Rounding with individual staff members should also include coming in on weekends to work side by side with those staff members every once in a while.
Some other powerful methods are:
- Regularly scheduled, issue-related staff meetings (weekly during times of change and other stressors)
- Case consultation in a group
- Appoint each staff member to a standing department committee, such as policies and procedures, recruitment and interviewing, in-service training needs, performance improvement, automation
- Conduct quarterly peer audits using agreed-upon standards
