Q&A: Case management reporting structure
Q. What is the best position on the executive team for the director of case management to report to?
A. There is no one perfect reporting structure for the director of case management. The answer is not position-specific, but person-specific. I recommend that the best reporting structure is the person on the executive team who has the most influence with the other VPs and who most understands what case management can accomplish. All things being equal (even though they never are), the executive team members should believe that the director of case management works for each of them, since the service is a service to the entire organization. In addition, reporting structures in hospitals today are very fluid (perhaps too fluid), so be prepared for change and never burn your bridges!
