Medicare Does Not Pay Acute-Care Hospitals for Outpatient Services They Provide to Beneficiaries in a Covered Part A Inpatient Stay at Other Facilities

On December 6, CMS published Special Edition MLN Matters 17033 to remind hospitals of proper billing procedures for services for beneficiaries in a covered Part A inpatient stay. The article does not accompany any transmittals and does not present any new or revised policy. It applies to providers billing under Part A for inpatient hospital services and to acute care hospitals providing outpatient services to beneficiaries who are inpatients at long-term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, inpatient psychiatric facilities, and critical access hospitals.
